A little background on Chester-le-Street:

Although there is evidence of Iron Age settlement, the Roman Fort, Concangis, is the proper start of Chester le Street. Some 400 years after the Romans left, monks built St Mary's & St Cuthbert's church from wood. This was rebuilt of stone in 1056, and some of this structure remains within the existing church building. Adjoining the church is Anker's House, originally an anchorite and now a museum, and one of the best surviving examples of this type of property - it is a Grade I listed building.
